Homestay House Rules

Hello and Welcome!

As you move in with your Home Stay family, please be aware of the following agreements (your homestay family may have additional rules, these are USuccessAbroad rules and you are expected to honor them!).

Around the house:
  • Take short showers and turn off lights when they are not in use.  Utilities are very expensive in the US!
  • Do not adjust the heating/cooling thermostat yourself.  Talk to your family about your needs.
  • If your family has pets, be very careful not to let them out of the house!
  • When you make yourself a snack, leave the kitchen clean – that is, exactly as you found it.
  • When you use the restroom facilities, rinse out the shower or bathtub, remove any hair, wipe off the sink, etc.  Leave the bathroom as you found it!
  • Keep your room to the standards required by your homestay family.
  • Do NOT eat in your room and therefore do NOT leave dirty dishes in your room (For instance, Tucson is a warm climate and bugs are not welcome – do your part)
  • Your job is to study and your family will not expect you to do a lot of chores but be helpful where you can.
  • Keep your belongings in your room when you are not using them.
  • No guests unless your Homestay Family agrees.  Never bring friends when your family is not home.
Safety:
  • You are part of a family.  It is expected that your “American Family” will know where you are and when you will return.
  • If you need to be out after dark, please let your family know.  They will usually arrange to help you get where you need to go and home safely.
  • Please have your mobile telephone with you, and keep it well-charged.
  • If you are uncomfortable with anything, let your American family or your CESL advisor know.  Of course UsuccessAbroad needs to know – we are your advocate.
Have fun!

This is great opportunity that your family is providing!  Have a really good time.  Many Homestay Families and students become like family and are lifelong friends.  Your family has you with them becauee they enjoy foriegn students – smile and enjoy yourself!!!!  It will be different than home – some things you will like and perhaps some, not.  This is part of your education – living in the world and learning to adapt to new and interesting things!  Welcome!!
